A new SEND and Inclusion strategy for Leeds is coming soon!

Find out more and have your say

Leeds City Council and Leeds health agencies are working on a new strategy to support children and young people in Leeds aged 0-25 with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and/or additional needs.

We are working with a range of partners, including children and young people and their families, and partners across education, health and social care services.

We are inviting people to join us at Zoom sessions to find out more about our early work on the strategy. We really want to hear what people think about it. If you are a child or young person with SEND and/or additional needs, a parent or carer, or you work with children and young people in Leeds, please join us at a session! Your views will help us to keep working on the strategy and make sure we get it right.

To find out more and take part, please visit our Leeds Local Offer website at https://leedslocaloffer.org.uk/#!/model/page/service/33653

We can also bring the session to groups of young people, families or partners. Email Natalie from the Learning Inclusion Service natalie.samuel@leeds.gov.uk to discuss this.

If you can’t make it to a session, or prefer to read about the strategy and give feedback in your own time, that’s also an option. See our website as above for more information.

As we move into the final week of this academic year, we are all thinking about the return to school in September. Please find a presentation by STARS below that gives some useful advice on how to prepare your child for the return to school. Underneath the presentation, are some of the documents mentioned in it. They may be useful in helping you to prepare your child for their return to school.

Week Beginning 29.06.2020

As we enter the final half of this half term, we are turning our minds to transition. Even though we are still unsure what school will look like in September, we are thinking about and planning for the return of our SEND pupils, whenever that may be. Some of you will already have received an All About Me Booklet to complete with your child and return to school (if you haven't received this, it could be that your child doesn't need one, however if you feel that they would benefit, contact me and I will post one to you). We will be sending out the My New Class Booklets as soon as we have more information about how schools will return. I will be organising individual transition plans for those children who need them, in discussion with parents and children. Whist we await further guidance on our eventual return to school, please use the resources below to help you to support your child. You can also contact me by email or by telephoning school, if you require more specific advice.

STARS shared some Edible Sensory Play ideas with us. Some of them look quite easy to make with every day ingredients that we'll all have in our kitchen cupboards!

Week Beginning 15.06.2020

These lovely relaxation techniques have been shared with us via SENIT.

Looking after our children’s well-being is so important in developing happy and content children.  We would like to share some strategies you can use at home to help your children feel calmer whilst refreshing their body and mind.  The strokes and Story Messages have come from or been inspired by Once Upon a Touch written by Mary Atkinson and Sandra Hooper.

Story Massage benefits:

  •  Story Massage eases tension and gives the opportunity for dedicated ‘calming time.’
  • The promotion of ‘feel good’ hormones which boost general well-being.
  • Reduction of aggressive and hyperactive behaviour.
  • Increased self-confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem.
  • Individual attention giving a child a sense of self-worth.

For beginners, please watch the 10 strokes and have a go.  Once you have mastered these you will be ready to use the stories.

Have a go and we hope you all enjoy the benefits of using these relaxing techniques at home.
