Southroyd Primary School

"Our vision is that our children leave Southroyd Primary School as Active Citizens- they have the skills, knowledge, confidence and enthusiasm they need to succeed and are ready for LIFE"

A GLOBAL SCHOOL

"In Southroyd we don't just prepare our children for high school - we prepare them for life"

Southroyd was awarded its fourth British Council "International School Award" in October 2017. We are now awaiting our reaccreditation in July 2021.

This is a culmination of a wide variety of projects as we strive towards preparing our children as global citizens.

As part of this ethos, we have been delighted to celebrate our tenth anniversary of partnership with Bachpan Primary in Surendranagar, Gujarat, India.

Bachpan Primary Website

Over the 17 years, a number of staff and children have visited each year and our school is excited to welcome our Indian friends as a key part of our calendar. The link originally supported by the British Council, and more recently self-funded by ourselves, enables our children to explore the lives of friends in India, exchanging materials, photographs, emails and discussions - as well as welcoming them back to Southroyd each year to enjoy their dance and culture.

The International School Award reflects a much wider range of topics, where we have reacted to world events and genuinely believe that a real and relevant curriculum can prepare the elements of active and global citizenship, as well as cementing our place within our own community.

We have had many European visitors in recent years, and welcome German students annually from Rostock University, as well as enjoying links with Comenius Partners from France, Germany, Italy and Austria. For the last 4 years we have welcomed guests from Panama each Autumn to look around and English school, giving our children the chance to meet and find out more about citizens from the wider world.

In school we aim to bring a varied diet which we relate to our co-operative values - we look at social justice, equality and diversity for example, looking at the contributions of key people in history who have made an impact to the wider world.

This school year we are going to extend our work on Black History Month, a feature of our school year, but to extend it from October to the Summer. During the year we will explore the contributions of different key black role models, with a new subject being chosen each month in assembly.
